Rainy St Patty's 5k

So, I ran an impromptu 5k this weekend...it was awesome! A girl I work with, Stephanie, convinced my roommate Siobhan and me to run the 5k with her (it didn't take much convincing). I was really looking forward to it after a tough week of training!

Wednesday I went to the gym and took a step class and body pump. I hadn't taken body pump in about a month because of all my shoulder issues. OH MAN was I sore Thursday morning! I decided to use the 5k as an excuse to take Thursday and Friday off from training. I think it was the right choice because I was still a little sore Saturday when I ran the 5k.

I had actually planned on running an easy 2 miles Friday, but it rained ALL day and there was just no way I was going to get my butt out there. In fact, on Saturday it rained pretty much all day, so I was thinking they were going to cancel the 5k. They didn't.

During the run, I had a really hard time getting going. It took me until about mile 2 to loosen up and feel like I wasn't dying. By the end of the third mile, I felt like I could run another 5. I guess this proves I've been training for distance, but I'm not really sure why it was so hard to get started. Maybe I need to warm up more next time.

I took Sunday off, too, because the weather was still so bad. How frustrating!

Yesterday I went to the gym with Siobhan and we took a body pump class. I'm sore today! But it's a nice sore not a "I can't function!" sore. It's kind of sad how much muscle I lost from not doing body pump for a month. I had to take all my weights down about 3 kilos and I can feel how much weaker my legs are during squats. I also feel the muscle loss in my lower back. Hopefully my shoulder stops being stupid so I can keep taking the class!!

Last Week

Last week I got a couple runs in, but didn't quite stick to schedule:

Saturday-Rest day

Sunday-No formal exercise. Walked a ton though-we did mapmyrun.com and tracked our path through NYC and we'd walked over 5 miles!

Monday-Went skiing. So exhausting!! My quads and shoulders were sore for 2 days, not to mention the soreness from bruises on my thighs and hands. I got them by ungracefully getting on the chair lift and squeezing the poles too hard with my hands:p I was so proud of myself though-it was my second time ever skiing and I didn't fall once! I even conquered the black diamond:)

Tuesday-Went for a run. Ended up walking about 1.5 miles and running 1.5. I was having all kinds of issues getting my ipod to stay in, then I realized it was upside down on the thing that attaches to your arm (yes, I'm so brilliant aren't I?). Poor Tia had to keep stopping and starting again. Then, I realized I'd dropped my car key and had to retrace my steps to find it. After almost losing it last Friday too (luckily a nice lady had picked it up and returned it to me), on my run yesterday I just put the key kind of hidden on top of my car. It worked much better and I didn't have to worry about it.

Wednesday-Was still super sore from Monday, so I decided to do some cross-training with the eliptical instead of going for a run. Poor Tia had scratched on my door and whined to wake me up, obviously hoping we would be going running. I did 3 miles on the eliptical in just over an hour.

Thursday-Rest day.

Friday-Decided to do my long run instead of doing it Saturday, because I had to work a double waitressing shift yesterday and knew I'd be exhausted if I ran before it. I misread the schedule though and thought it was supposed to be a 5k this week, but really it was 6 miles. I'll just do 6 miles the next 2 weeks instead. The 5k went well though (I just did it on my own, not in a race) and I ran it in 33:00. That was a 10:40 pace and a big improvement from the 11:00/mile pace I've been running so I was happy with that. It also included a couple minor pauses-once when my headphones fell out and once when Tia decided she had to say hi to a lady walking by.

Saturday-Wow, what an exhausting day at work!! I would be willing to bet I walked at least 5 miles during my 10 hour shift. 3 people called in sick, so the rest of us were running around like crazy and waiting on 6 or 7 tables at a time all day! I didn't even get a chance to pee or eat the entire time haha.

Today-Did a good strength training workout. It was the same one I did with my trainer the last time I met with her and definitely made me tired.

This week I should actually be able to stick to the training schedule for the most part, except I'm working another double on Saturday so I'll probably do my long run on Friday again.

Also, my right hip has been slightly bothering me. Nothing major, but after I run it hurts and kind of pops when I walk. I looked it up and the website said it's called Snapping Hip Syndrome and is quite common for runners. They also said it could lead to bursitis, so I'm going to try and ice, massage, strengthen, and stretch the area like they said so hopefully it doesn't get any worse.

Getting the Ball Rolling...

Here is my update for the last 5 days...SUPER productive!

Thursday I ran 3.5 in 36.26
Friday I took the day off

Saturday I took kickboxing at the gym. Holy God was it tough. I think it was the hardest workout I have had in a LONG LONG time. Your feet are constantly moving and you're using your whole body the entire time. I didn't realize how much I was using my upper body until Sunday, when my arms and back and shoulders were so sore I could hardly move! It was such a fun class, and I really hope they add it to the classes at my gym regularly because it was just a 'trial' class. There were maybe 20 people there and there was plenty of space to move without crashing into someone, so I enjoyed that a lot too!

Sunday I ran 5 and walked 1 with my baby doggie out in the AMAZING 50 degree, sunny weather. LOVE IT. I ran the 5 in about 52 minutes. I almost made it to the end of Stewart Neck (the road I live on). Can't wait for the first run where I have to make the turn to head towards the beach!

Yesterday I took the day off...I didn't mean to but I ended up laying down on the couch and fell asleep for about 4 hours. I woke up and watched Make it or Break it and then promptly fell asleep for the rest of the night. I must have been REALLY tired!!

So ...

Slow start, Strong finish

That's how I would describe both my week and my run today. Both got off to kind of bad starts, but it ended up being a pretty good week all around with the highlight being a 5 mile run outside today.

Monday-For some reason, I was extremely sluggish and tired. I went to the gym and could not make myself run for more than .75 miles. I walked 3.25 miles to try and get something in, but it was not a good start to the week. I don't really know why I was so exhausted-the only thing I could think of was that I got too much sleep (about 9 hours) the night before, when I've been getting about 8 a night.

Tuesday-I was all ready to go and excited to run...then all the treadmills were taken! There are quite a bit of treadmills at my gym too and it was at 9:45 am, so it seemed like an odd time for them all to be occupied. I decided to do the eliptical instead and ended up doing 3 miles on there in just over an hour.

Wednesday-Finally, a decent run! I ran 3.5 miles and walked 1.5 for a total of 5 miles in 1 hour, 3 minutes. I stopped twice to walk .25 miles during the run.

Thursday-Did the yoga class at my gym, it was hard! We spent most of the class balancing on one leg and my butt was very sore after.

Today-Ran 5 miles straight!!! According to my Nike+, it took me just under 55 minutes. Not too bad for it being the first time running outside and the first time I've ever run that far without stopping.

The run got off to a really bad start: the wind was gusting and I was freezing in the mid 30's weather, Tia (my dog) was pulling and sniffing, and I chose the wrong way to run on the bike path-it still had tons of snow on it! At that point I was almost defeated, but I decided to turn around and try the other direction and it was perfectly clear. The one direction I went first is the town of Colonie, while the other way was the town of Niskayuna, and I guess Colonie just doesn't care about removing snow from the path! I also shortened up Tia's leash and she got into a great rhythm of running right next to me and following my speed. She was so well behaved for the rest of the run and kept looking up at me with her tongue hanging out like, "This is so much fun!". I definitely found my new running buddy. The sun also came out and it was beautiful. Between miles 3 and 4 I was literally smiling while running in the gorgeous sun and listening to Sarah Buxton on my ipod=)

It was a great feeling and I think I might have experienced my first "runner's high"! I'm so sore right now though-running outside definitely works some different muscles than running on the treadmill. Tia keeps giving me lots of love and kisses so I'm sure that's her way off telling me she wants to go again soon. The forecast looks nice, so hopefully next week I'll be able to continue running outside. Heather's right, outside>>>>>>treadmill running.

This weekend I won't be doing too much exercising besides walking around NYC. I may try and get some strength in but that's about it. Monday I'm going skiing, then Tuesday I'll resume the normal schedule.

Where Has the Time Gone?!

Wow! It has been a LONG time since I've been able to post, (or had anything to post about, but let's not talk about that) but I'm going to catch up now... Actually, scratch that, I'm not even going to try to catch up because I can barely remember what I did yesterday.

Last week I went to the gym and took classes 3 times. I haven't been taking body pump because somehow I hurt my shoulder and it has really been bothering me. It feels like my arm is trying to come out of its socket and I can literally feel something pulling/threatening to tear in my shoulder. I can tell I've been either tense or compensating by holding my posture differently, because now my whole back and neck hurt. NO FUN! So, I took it easy last week and didn't do body pump or run at all.

So far this week I have done the following:

Monday - Ran 3.5 in 36.01
Tuesday - Ran 2.0 in 19.45
Wednesday - Took step class, smooshed in the back corner by some high schoolers
Thursday - Oh wait, that's today. I'm planning on running 3.5

I'm excited to get off work and go for a run because it's about 50 degrees out and beautifully sunny and I just can't wait to run!!

YAAAAAAY!

That's all for now...

Ran 5 for the first time!

I've been seeing some great progress which is quite encouraging=) Here's a recap of the end of my week:

Thursday: The kids didn't have a snowday, so I was able to go to the gym and take a yoga class. It was really fun and actually made my legs a bit tired. I wasn't really expecting it to be a good workout, but we held all the positions so long it ended up working my muscles pretty well.

Friday-Ran 5 miles! I walked 1 too, for a total of 6 miles in 1:11:30. I only had to stop twice-after 3 miles and after 4.5 miles-to walk .25 miles. The amount I'm able to run without stopping is getting so much better. I'm going to try to do my 3.5 mile run tomorrow without stopping at all. As far as my speed, I ran most of the running part at 5.5mph and walked at 3.7 mph. I had to slow down to 5.2mph between 3.5-4.5 miles ran, but did the first (from 0-3 miles) and last (from 4.5-5 miles) sections of my run completely at 5.5.

Saturday-Rest day. My friend wasn't able to make it up to visit due to bad weather, but I'd already rearranged my schedule so I just kept my rest day on Saturday.

Today-Strength training and stretching. I did my whole strength circuit I got the last time I met with my trainer. I've been slacking off a bit with the strength and only doing short sessions or skipping them, so it was good to get a full workout in.

For the upcoming week, I'll be running 3.5 on M/W, 2 on T, yoga on R, and 5 miles F. I'm going away for the weekend so I arranged my schedule the same as I did this week since that worked pretty well. I'll take a rest day Saturday, hopefully get some strength in Sunday, then next Monday I won't be running but I will be skiing! I figure it won't make too much difference in training since it'll be a great substitute workout.

Good last couple days

Today I had a great run, but first I'll tell you about the beginning of my week:

Sunday-Kind of a bust. I did about 15 minutes of wall sit, crunches, and push ups but that was all I could bring myself to do. My legs were so achy from waitressing Saturday and I needed a day of rest.

Monday-Ran 3 miles, walked 1 for a total of 4 miles in 49 minutes.

Tuesday-Ran 2 miles, walked 2 for a total of 4 miles in 54 minutes. I ran the 2 miles without stopping and was pretty exhausted after.

Wednesday-Had a great run! I wasn't looking forward to it because the kids I nanny had a snow day and if I was gonna go I'd have to go after a 10 hour day of work. I decided to push myself to the gym though and am so glad I did. I was able to run 2.5 miles wihtout stopping! Then I did another half mile for good measure and 1 mile of walking, for a total of 4 miles in 49 minutes. I felt really good while I was running and still feel great now.

I'm hoping the kids don't have another snow day tomorrow, but we're supposed to get another storm so we'll see. If they don't, I'm going to take whatever class they have in the mind-body room tomorrow morning (yoga or pilates). If they do have a snow day, I think I'll just do some strength in the living room-I'm sure the kids would join along with me:) Then Friday I plan on doing my long run-it'll be 5 miles so I'm a bit nervous but hopefully the trend from tonight will continue and it won't be too awful!

Also, I think I'll start posting my weekly and total miles like Heather. My numbers aren't quite as pitiful as they were in the beginning, so I feel ok about posting them:p
